The Zeroth Dimension!

Lucifer was agitated. The Nobel Prize for physics had been announced and not him but his fellow scientist Richard had won it for his theory on 5^th dimension.

Lucifer was one of the most renowned physicists, just like Richard. However, given his belief that the forces of universe are evil, he was nicknamed Lucifer by the scientist community.

Both he and Richard were working on dimensionalism, i.e. discovering dimensions beyond the four known till then. While he was working to prove existence of 0^th dimension, Richard was researching on 5^th dimension.

Lucifer too had submitted his theory on 0^th dimension for the Nobel Prize. In his theory, he had claimed that not only does the 0^th dimension exist, but it rules over all other dimensions including the known four- length, width, depth, and time.

Although both Lucifer and Richards completed and presented their research at the same time, the world lapped up Richard’s discovery of 5^th dimension with applause and rejected Lucifer’s 0^th dimension theory. The scientist community laughingly called his 0^th dimension theory a wild imagination or a science fiction at best.

Lucifer found it hard to digest the insult. He knew he was right- the 0^th-dimension really existed. A dimension which represents nothingness. A dimension which supersedes all other dimensions of the universe and can destroy all of them- including the 4^th dimension called time.

His logic was simple. If E = MC² is true, so should be E – MC² = 0. It means that all the energy and mass of the universe can be converged into nothingness represented by the 0 in the right hand side of the equation.

The Nobel Prize announcement was the last straw on camel’s back. Jilted, Lucifer knew what he wanted to do. He would have to show the world in practice, and not just in theory, that the 0^th dimension existed, that he was right.

He walked through the security checks to get into the Large Hadron Collider tunnel. A scientist of his eminence hardy deserved to be stopped or asked any questions at this most advance particle research facility at Geneva. 

Inside the tunnel, different particles like Photon, Boson and Hadron were streamed continuously and their collisions studied in order to unravel the mysteries of universe. The research had already led the scientists to believe that there could be up to 10 dimensions and not just four as was believed earlier. What they didn’t believe in was the 0^th dimension.  

Lucifer inserted in a small chip into the particle emitter tube. The tube started emitting Photons which travelled back and forth at the speed of light through the 27 Kilometre long tunnel. But these weren’t ordinary Photons. These were the ones which could attain 0^th dimension, and could make the surroundings attain the same.

Inside the tunnel, as the newer photons collided with the ones reflected back from the end of the tunnel, they lost a dimension. First, they became two dimensional entities, just having length and width but no depth, then they turned one –dimensional – linear entities. And after the fourth collision, they turned into something which had 0-dimensions.

And this wasn’t the end. The Photons which went into the 0^th dimension, behaved like tiny balckholes spreading 0-dimensionism. They triggered a chain reaction where all matter surrounding them got sucked into them and vanished.

Soon, everything inside and around the tunnel started vanishing into the newly formed tiny blackholes, the 0-dimensional entities.

First, the tunnel collapsed, then the city of Geneva, followed by the Earth, Solar System and the galaxy Milkyway. Soon the Universe started to implode, with stars, planets, black-holes and all matter rushing towards the 0-dimensional vortex and vanishing therein forever.

gobbling up the matter around it.          

And all this happened instantaneously without any time lapse, since the 4^th dimension time had already been gobbled up by the 0th dimension.

Lucifer’s prophecy that “if E = MC² is true, then E – MC² = 0 should also be true”, had come true. the sum of all the energy and the matter contained in the universe had become 0. His revenge was complete. Only that he wasn’t around to witness it.

It is not known if the universe, converted into 0-dimensional nothingness will remain like that for ever, or this would be the beginning of next big bang with matter again borning out of nothingness and start forming a new universe.

Because no one really knows how 0-dimensionanism behaves.

Mirror-Mirror

It was a holiday and I was visiting the Mirror-Maze section of the amusement park.

Walking through the maze, I was surrounded by multiple images of mine in the mirrors around me. They were everywhere………., in front of me, behind me, to my right, and to my left. Then there was one above me on the mirror attached to the ceiling.

I started feeling a bit dizzy, so I took a pause.  Catching my breath I was enjoying being surrounded by my own images. They looked just like me. They moved exactly as I moved. If I moved to front, they moved to front. When I moved back, they too moved back. When I laughed, they too laughed. When I made a face, so did they too. I started entertaining myself by moving my body-parts in various dance-like movements. I was enjoying the sight of the images mimicking me.

Suddenly, I felt that one particular image of mine, the one right in front of me, was a bit different.  I felt that this one wasn’t mimicking me........

I watched it once again, a little more attentively this time, just to make sure that it was only my own reflection in the mirror. Yes, it looked exactly like me, dressed in white shirt and grey trousers, and wearing the same specs.  It was me undoubtabally.

Looking towards my reflection, I made a weird face, then smiled, and then removed my specs expecting it to follow my actions……..

But it didn’t………

Rather, it kept on staring at me with serious and meaningful look.

I got a feeling of bewilderment and uneasiness in me. What this image is? Who is it?

Before I could react, the image moved. The man quickly took out a revolver from his pocket and put pointed straight towards my head. “Freeze,” he shouted.

So, he wasn't my reflection, but someone real.

Raising my hand up I asked, “Who are you? And what do you want?”

“I am you,” he replied staring straight into my eyes. “I am your persona from the parallel universe,” 

Watching my puzzled looks, he went on to elaborate.

“You may not know, but a parallel universe exists which is just a replica of your own universe, and that’s where I come from.”

“My universe is a parallel universe to your universe. Everything and everyone who is in this world, has an exact replica  in the parallel universe. Like you exist in this world, and I am your replica existing in the parallel world.”

I had started to understand.

“So it was true,” I thought. “The speculation that a parallel universe exists is true.” And I here was facing my own persona from the parallel universe who had traveled through light years to meet me.

He spoke more. “Whatever happens in your universe happens in our universe. Every event which happens in your world happens exactly in the same way in our world too." 

“But there is a major difference- On timescale, my universe precedes your universe by exactly one hour,” he informed me. "It means that whatever happens in your world, happens one hour before in the parallel universe, " he continues.

“Foe example, I was actually born in parallel universe exactly one hour before you were born in your universe. And I will die exactly one hour before you die,” he explained.

As I understood what he was saying, I asked the question most relevant in the situation, “What do you want? Why have you come here?”

He looked straight into my eyes and replied, “I have come to commit suicide. I am fed up with my life in the parallel universe and want to die. However, I can not cease to exist as long as you are existing, so I have come here to kill you……..so that I too would stop existing.”

“You are the root cause of my existence,” he said without taking his eyes off from me. “I am going to kill you now just to allow myself give up my existence.”

Before I could react, he pressed the lever of revolver. I heard a loud bang and then sound of shattering of glass. Then I felt a sharp pain inside my head caused by the bullet travelling through my brain. Soon, I was dead.

However, just an hour before I died, my parallel persona from the parallel universe had to die. As per the laws of parallel universes, all events of his universe had to precede the events of this universe by one hour. This included my death also. Hence ‘his death’ took place exactly one hour before ‘my death’....

But again, as he died one hour before the time he met me to  fire the bullet, he could not have fired the bullet at me (A dead man can’t hold a revolver and shoot). This chain of events logically resulted into my not getting shot at and killed. So I survived.

But since I survived, he stayed alive (and didn’t die an hour before). And since he was alive, he certainly met me and fired that killing bullet at me. This improvised chain of events could have no other consequence than my being dead, killed by the bullet he shot. But my death meant an even earlier death for my killer (an hour before), and so again I escaped getting killed. But then…………………

The events created by me and my parallel persona from the other universe had pushed both of us into fifth dimension. We were trapped in the fifth dimension shuttling back and forth between events and didn’t know how to come out………

My family searched for me everywhere but couldn’t find. They had last seen me entering the mirror-maze. Nobody saw me coming out from there, but at the same time, they didn’t find any trace of me inside the mirror-maze either.

Naturally. People from this world could not see the fifth dimension I had got trapped into.

Adam Without Eve

How would you survive if you are the last person in the world? #Survivor

“Houston, initiate return procedure”.

“I repeat; Houston, initiate return procedure”.

There was no answer.

He called into his radio again and again for next one hour, but there was no answer.

Housed alone in his space-ship a billion miles away from earth, the astronaut decided to take things in hand. Upon getting no response from Houston, he handed over the command of his spaceship to the master computer, which initiated automatic return procedures and put the spaceship into trajectory back to earth. In a few days, he will be back to earth. Hope he establishes contact with Houston once he is near.

Little did he know about what had happened on earth when he was away. Travelling in deep space, his ship had got caught into a worm-hole and landed into a space where time and space merge into one another. Inside the wormhole, the time loses its meaning and the space dominates.  Finally, when his ship came out of the wormhole, he had landed into a point of time trillions of years ahead in future. Now the earth was trillions of years older than when he had left it. But he himself was his old usual self, a twenty-eight year old man.

But meanwhile, something cruel had happened to earth.  During the first million years after he had left, the earth was struck by a big comet wiping-off all forms of life on it. Every living being, including humans, vegetation, and even microbes, had perished in the impact and the radiation storm that followed. The only things left were just the elements of nature like water, air and matter.

Due to the effect of impact, the earth now spinned faster on its axis, one rotation in one minute. And that too in reverse direction. So now the Sun rose from west and the day and night were was just a minute long. The earth also revolved around the Sun much faster, one revolution in 100 hours instead of one year. So now, an year on earth, comprising of all seasons-summer, autumn, and winter, got completed in a span of just 100 hours.

By sheer luck, the astronaut had survived the extinction. Just because he was away from earth, and because he, due to some error in his space-travel, had traveled into future trillions of years away.

The earth was visible now. The astronaut again tried to contact Houston. Still, no answer.

Finally, his well programmed computers landed the spaceship on a clear patch of land on earth.

The doors opened and he came out. The world before him had changed; or there wasn’t any world at all. No signs of civilization, no trees, no people, just vast expanses of land and water, and that too looking different.

He rushed back to his spaceship. He glanced on the computer screen. The computer had rightly captured the time on earth………. year 2000000014. His worst nightmares had come true. He had got caught in some wormhole and traveled a trillion years into future. And by the time he returned, the world had died.

He had no incentive to live. The universe had played a cruel joke on him; it had let him survive, while the world died.

“No point in living alone,” he thought.  With no one to talk to, no one to love and no one to live for. An overdose of painkiller morphine injection available in his ship will solve the problem.

Another alternative would be to flee. His spaceship and supercomputer installed in it were capable of launching him back into space, where he would wander through galaxies, hoping to find a planet where life exists, and hope that he can live again in the company of life.

But he said to himself, “No! This earth has been my home. I can not desert it. I will live here and die here”.

The powdered form of high energy food available in the spaceship contained billions of giga-calories of energy, enough for him to survive another hundred years.

Then a thought occurred to him. “The powers of universe have gifted me life. Now I must do the same to the earth. I must gift life to earth. I must restart life on earth,” he said to himself.

But he was only one of his species. He could not reproduce without a female of his species.  He was alive, but his body was useless. Without a female, his body was useless for reproducing. Then how could he sow the seeds of life on earth again?

Then an idea flashed into his mind. His body is not useless. His body contains microbes and bacteria everywhere inside, in his blood-stream, in his intestines, in his stomach, and even in his saliva.

These microbes, who had survived extinction along with him, held the key to starting life on earth again.

He was excited. His spaceship had an advance laboratory where he could collect the microbes taken out from his body and nourish them in test-tubes, before releasing them into the natural habitat of earth. The microbes will multiply, reproduce, and finally undergo evolution. Over time, these microbes will evolve into multicellular organisms, then into simple species like worms, into complex species like fish, birds, dinosaurs, and may be one day into human beings. 

“That’s how life had started on earth, and that’s how it will start again’” he resolved.

Working enthusiastically over the next few days, he collected samples from his body fluids like saliva, bloodstream and urine containing different types of microbes, and preserved in test-tubes. He put the microbes in fluids rich in nourishment, rich in carbon, hydrogen and amino acids. Then he spread the nourished microbes in as many places as he could, in water in the lake, in soil, in the sea.

A few months passed. He was standing by the side of a lake where he had infused a dose of microbes. Suddenly he noticed something. There was something greenish floating on the surface.

“Algae,” he shouted in surprise and joy. The microbes had evolved into algae, a superior form of life.  Life was back on earth.

He was surprised how the evolution had taken place so fast? Within a few months. Then he realized that the changes in earth’s speed of rotation had changed the rules of evolution, making it much faster than it used to be.  Now the evolution of species would be much faster, may be a million times faster than earlier.

Soon the algae would evolve into more complex species. Soon grass will grow, tress will cover the earth, birds will fly, primates will walk on their legs, and soon he may see images of himself walking on earth, hunting, eating, reproducing, venturing into and spreading over newer and newer continents.

And with the extra-ordinary pace of evolution that was expected, he might be able see a lot of this happening over his own lifetime, another 50 or 60 years.

He threw away the morphine injections. He now had a purpose for his life. He wanted to live.  To see life, whose seeds he had sown, grow on earth again.

He had played Adam even without an eve. Life was back on earth.

E=MC2

Albert Einstein was sitting in his chair staring at a page in his diary. The page had something scribbled on it which he had marked as ‘Important’.

E=mc²

Einstein closed his eyes and went into deep thoughts. Years and years of his hard work had finally yielded a result which could be summed up in just four characters…….E=mc².

No one in the world, but only he knew the true potential of the discovery. Matter changing into energy………. A miniscule quantity of matter generating trillions of Mega joules of energy, enough for the planet’s needs for ever.

With closed eyes, Einstein started seeing an immensely prosperous world. With abundant availability of energy, all problems like hunger and disease had vanished. The mankind, with all its energy needs met easily, could concentrate on better things than struggling for energy. Availability of energy at the push of a button fulfilled all basic needs of life very well. The world was a happier place, resembling heaven, where no one craved for basic needs of life, no one was hungry, no one fought, and no one conspired for accumulating more wealth. The humans now were engaged in more constructive things like arts, philosophy, culture and of course increasing the longevity of humans, which already had crossed 300 years. The world lived in peace.

The human race was sure that even if the Sun runs out of energy, they will create their own Sun by making the Moon’s matter undergo controlled disintegration and slowly converting into energy. The Moon will serve as the new Sun for earth. After the Moon gets used up, humans could use Mars, then some other planet. Universe was the limit.

Einstein thought that such a discovery couldn’t have been only his. He started believing in God. He suspected that God only had planted this discovery and the formula E=mc² in his mind as a means of blessing the world. He felt blessed to be a carrier of God’s blessing to the world. He started imagining God. How does he look like…. Will human race ever be able to see him?

Suddenly a thought came into his mind, ‘if God exists, so must be the devil’. What if the idea was planted in my mind by the devil, and not God?”

He closed his eyes. He saw a different world now. The hands-on sources of energy did not reach to each and every human, but was hijacked by a few mighty and powerful. The discovery led to development of weapons of mass destruction. The discovery changed the methods of war.

The tiny atom, instead of playing God, had started to play devil.

Einstein saw fighter-jets flying over countries in different continents and dropping chunks of matter, which disintegrated into energy destroying countries, and whole continents. In no time, the human race became extinct. The earth remained destructed and poisoned. This was as early as in the year 2020.

Einstein wasn't sure if the discovery was God's gift or the devil's plan.

With shaking hands, he tore of the page from his diary. With sweat on his forehead fogging his glasses he was barely able to see the letters scribbled on it ……..E=mc². He though deeply and then with shaking hands he wrote "undo" in large letters superscibing everything on the page.

He put a cigar in his mouth and lit it with a lighter. He took a long puff, and then lit the lighter again. Holding the paper in his hand, he slowly brought it closer to the flame, till it caught fire.

The matter in the paper quickly burnt and converted into energy. The ashes on the table were quickly cleaned up by his housekeeping help.

Year 1945. World War-II.

Japan was advancing fast. Its air force had caused heavy damage to American ships and costal installations. If not contained, soon it could invade the United States of America through the western coast.

President Hary Truman sent a strong message to his Chief of Defense Staff, “Japan must be contained.... by any means, ….at any cost. We cannot see the great nation of USA fall to tiny island nation of the East”.

The message was passed on quickly down the line. Bombing of Hiroshima was ordered.

Upon getting orders on 7^th of August 1945, Fighter pilot Pual Tibbet along with his co-pilot, quickly took to sky. Full of patriotic feelings, he flew his plane ‘Enola Gay’ towards Japan like a man possessed. Their plane reached Japanese airspace within an hour.

Hovering over Hiroshima, Tibbet released the latch precisely at 08.15 am. A bundle of mass started to fall towards the city.

Within minutes, the bundle hit ground. Flames erupted, a small cloud of fume rose towards sky, but quickly vanished.

Paul Tibbet radioed back to Air Force One command station, “ Mission accomplished. A few Japanese fighter planes and Radars are engulfed in flames. A few of their bunkers also seem to have got hit. May be a few of their men also got killed. But the destruction is limited to Japanese defense premises only. No civil casualties expected”.

This is the best a conventional bomb could have achieved. the bomb which Tibbet dropped was no atomic weapon but a conventional bomb. No one knew if there could be a better weapon. No one knew if E was equal to mc².

World war-II did not end in 1945.

But the world too did not end in 2020.
